Sense of Place at Towner

I’ve just put up an instalation made by pupils from West Rise School at Towner in Eastbourne. It’s part of a fabulous exhibition of artwork from various schools in Eastbourne. I was artist in residence at West Rise and made tiny sculptures with the children. We back-lit their little ‘beings’ and turned them into shadow pieces. The work explores their own ideas of ‘Sense of Place’.

I love this work- full of wonderful little details entirely made by the children.

It’s only open until 30th October and Towner closed on Mondays. Please take a look next week if you can!

My new mangle printing press

I’ve just converted an old toy mangle into a little press. It prints relief blocks beautifully up to about A4 size.
It took me a while to figure out but the trick to mangle presses seems to be putting a board on top as well as underneath. This seems to do the job of the bigger rollers on a real press. Before I figured this out I always got wrinkles in the paper. With this little press a piece of lino on top works as the top board. This is the third mangle press I’ve converted. It’s fabulously satisfying. I haven’t managed to do intaglio prints on a mangle press though. If anyone has any tips on this please leave a comment!

I love working this size now. Gives space to really explore a narrative and atmosphere.

The repetative process of cutting away is heavenly. Dog asleep at my feet, music on.

Squashed Face Dog Travels the Universe

A while ago I drew a dog, based on my friend Sara doing an impersonation of her Pug’s under-bite:

Since then, we got our own amazing little puppy…a miniature Schnowzer/chinese powder pink puffball cross (or something). Called Dixie Bluebell Daphne Boxall.

This drawing is a plan for a print- I want to make some work about the downside of parenthood. This day at the zoo was a bit bleak. There’s something bleak about the way you have expectations- (wow we’re going to see a tiger! ) and then the tiger’s pacing up and down behind a fence. You can see it too well- the mystery’s gone. And it was cold and I was fed up and the cafe was rubbish. I want to do some work about the frustrations and disapointments of parenthood. I don’t want to just select the good moments to make pictures about.

There was a little rubbish dump at the corner of the site we were on. Sammy said it was better than the zoo. They played and played- best pirate buddies. And I got to draw. For me, these drawings remind me why I bother drawing- It was a lovely process of being involved and lost in observing, and then I end up with these things that etch this fabulous morning on my memory. I feel the drawings just get my boys brotherly play, and I’ll look at these pics in the future and remember what they were like at the moment.
