Old King Goll

In ‘The Madness of King Goll’ by Yeats a heroic king breaks down after a battle and follows ‘a whirling and wandering fire’ that grows in his ‘most secret spirit’. He wanders away into the woods, becomes unfeared by the animals and lives a melancholy solitary life. I imagine him still wandering on amongst us.
